a). BURIALS: The burial register for the cemetery notes there are 16,229 recorded burials there. (b). The register does not start until April, 1858 for the first recorded burial. (c). The first burial was believed to be in 1853, but the cemetery does not hold any records for these earlier burials, or just how many. (d). There are a number of pauper burials at the cemetery but their number or names are not known. The cemetery office holds no records for them. So the 16,229 burials recorded at the cemetery do not have these numbers as part of the total. One area that the cemetery office has done is to record all the memorial inscriptions known at a point in time onwards and have these MIs listed against the names in their database. I am assuming these would be memorials in place from 1981 when the Heidelberg (now Banyule) Council took over control of the cemetery. One other area that I am noting is that researchers are looking at the Victorian Death Indexes (on CD and microfiche) and noting that a death place of Heidelberg, in most cases meant they were buried in Heidelberg (Warringal) Cemetery. I followed up on one family via a request that noted that 8 members of the family died over time at Heidelberg (and believed they were buried at Warringal) but NONE were buried there. They were buried at Fawkner, Coburg and Springvale. All had died over time at the Austin Hospital, Heidelberg, and of course this gave rise to the belief they would have been buried locally, ie Heidelberg (Warringal) Cemetery. Really only the death certificate notes the actual burial data. (a). The cemetery was proclaimed under the Cemeteries Act of 1854 - An Act for the Establishment and Management of Cemeteries in the Colony of Victoria [Assented to 23rd March, 1854] published as a supplement to the Victorian Gazette of 31st March, 1854, No. 26. (b). Control was given to Trustees nominated by ministers of the local Christian Churches. Noted in a letter from D. McArthur, 8th August 1854 naming the Trustees as follows: - Episcopalian Church - F.A. Powlett - Presbyterian Church - Aneas Macpherson. - Catholic Church - Paul Costello David Weatherill Email: djweath@bigpond.net.auBundoora, Victoria, Australia |
