| Opened for use in 1860, this is the site of Chiltern's second public cemetery. This site of ten acres was the cause of many complaints from the residents because they considered it too far from the town, too wet and swampy and unfit for burials, and the graves were haphazardly arranged. Animals were able to roam around the graves because the cemetery trust had no constructed a fence around the preimeter. Over 1000 people are believed to be buried here. The cemetery closed in 1881 when the Chiltern New Cemetery opened. |
