Eulogy
Vera was born at Freeling on 14th August 1920. She was the fourth child
of 10 children born to Johann Gottlieb and Anna Clara Leske (nee
Schwarz). Vera was baptised at the Freeling St Paul's Lutheran Church on
26th September 1920 by Pastor Sprengel. Her Godparents were Alma
Wandel, Clara Leinert and Frederich August Leske.
She grew up on her parent's farm at Daveyston, attending the Daveyston
school for her schooling. On 25th August 1935 she was confirmed by
Pastor E Rohde. The day after her confirmation she went to work for her
Aunty Mary and Uncle Fred Schwarz on their farm at Nain, where she
worked for several years. She also worked for several other people
helping with house chores and milking cows, spending three months at Dr
Basedows. She also spent time picking grapes in the valley.
While attending Charlie Linke and Elsie Paschke's wedding she met a
handsome young man and true love blossomed. On the 5th of April 1951
she was married to Carl Wilhelm Schultz at St Paul's Lutheran Church,
Freeling by Pastor E Rohde. She then made her home on Carl's farm at
Lowbank near Waikerie. Vera joined St Paul's Lutheran Church, Lowbank
where she was an active member, taking her turn with others to clean the
church for many years. She also joined the Ladies Guild of which she was
a regular attendee. In the latter years she was unable to attend church but
remained faithful to her Lord.
Her life on the farm was one of support and partnership with her husband.
They grew wheat, barley and oats and kept sheep, fowls for their eggs and
cows. Every Wednesday became the weekly shopping day, meeting the
children for a special lunch treat and delivering the cream and eggs which
were picked up by Farmers Union and processed at Eudunda.
The marriage was blessed with 6 children, 5 girls and 1 boy, 2 girls being
stillborn. She has 11 grandchildren, 7 great grandchildren and 1 great
great grandchild. She was a great support to her children helping
whenever asked to babysit. The grandchildren always enjoyed a day or
holiday at the farm.
After Carl died on 21st July 1985, she stayed on the farm with her son
Desmond for several years and in January 1990 she shifted into a unit at
Tower Court, Waikerie. Here she found a new sense of freedom where
she could access the shops and facilities available to her without relying on
family to take her as she never possessed a driver's licence. She made
many new friends and was able to attend Day Care every Wednesday and
the Senior Citizen's group. In her spare time she enjoyed knitting for the


Day Care and her family. She had a small garden at Tower Court where
she continued her love of gardening growing her own vegetables and some
flowers. Her greatest joy was playing cards at Senior Citizens and at
home. A pack of cards was always on the table and if no one was there
she would play patience. I hear that she was rather good at letting the
grandchildren win so they wouldn't feel sad.
Vera mostly enjoyed good health. She developed arthritis of the hips in her
late 50's and was close to being in a wheelchair, but thanks to modern
technology she was able to have each hip replaced 2 weeks apart and then
was able to enjoy normal mobility once again. One of these hips was
replaced in 1993 and then she was able to still be mobile until the day
before she passed away. In 2009 she fell and broke her femur and with
her good fortune she did not upset the hip replacements that were
previously done, so metal plates were put in to stabilise the bone and she
continued to be able to live independently.
Soon after this Vera began to become forgetful and for safety reasons she
was convinced to move into Riversgate where there was partial care. She
settled in well after the initial move and enjoyed the company of the people
that were also living there. In 2011 Vera's memory continued to deteriorate
and she moved into Karingal where there was full time care. She settled in
well and remained there until her heart failed her on Saturday 2nd
September when she was moved to the hospital to facilitate the care that
she needed. She passed away a short time later with her family in
attendance
The family would like to thank the staff at both Riversgate and Karingal
where the care was exceptional. Vera was always treated with respect and
loving care and she was made to feel this was definitely her home.
Vera is survived by her 2 sisters, Gladys and Melva, her four children, 10
grandchildren, 7 great grandchildren and 1 great great grandchild.
