Hans Smidt Born
Died Esperance
News Paper Articles.
Referring to the death by drowning announced in our Esperance telegram a few days ago of Hans Smidt formally well known at port Adelaide as captain of the Grace Darling and other vessels,Mr Robert Sayers in a letter dated from Broken Hill, states that he knew the deceased longer than anyone else in south Australia, the acquaintances dating back to as far as 1854.Our correspondent then belonged to the HMS Cruiser which during the Crimean war was blockading Riga and the adjacent ports.Smidt was in a Danish Vessel which was captured by HMS Cruiser in attempting to run the blockade.
With the remainder of the crew he was taken
aboard the British warship but was subsequently liberated and our correspondent
lost sight of him till 18 years ago, when the acquaintance was renewed at port
On many occasions subsequently they exchanged recollections. Mr Sayers regards it as somewhat singular that smidt should have met with a violent end after the many perils he had escaped.

Captain Tulloch to whom I referred the other day must have been a strong man.
Yesterday Mr William Tulloch told me that his Father once carried two bags of flour from the beach landing at Fowlers bay up to the old homestead at the foot of the sand hills.
About 50 years ago when I was in Elder smiths he said’ Captain Smidt was ion my fathers schooner Grace Darling. The driver of a trolley, carting wool from the west coast asked the clerk at the scales what was the weight of a certain bale of wool.
Learning that it was 7 cwt., the driver
explained that the schooners crew wanted to know because Captain Smidt had carried it from the seaweed to the boat. Captain Smidt was drowned at

A sad calamity has plunged the whole of the
community into a state of sorrow. News was brought to town late last night by a
young man named Hannott that two bodies were lying on
the beach beyond Rossiter Bay .The police were
despatched and returned this morning with the bodies, which were identified as
Captain Hans Smidt on of the best known master
mariners at Port Adelaide, and his assistant Henry Manning a young fellow from
Corydon South Australia. Captain Smidt arrived a few
weeks ago from

It is surmised that the boat capsized in
making for shelter, as the craft is held fast by the anchor .The men
evidently tried to swim ashore , both being good swimmers , but they got into broken water , which here
extends to 200yards, and , being exhausted, were drowned in the surf. The body
of Manning was unclothed, while the body of the captain had the trousers and
shirt on.
Captain Smidt
was about sixty years of age. He had been trading for about thirty five years

Not a day goes by without remembering
you Dad, you were always so kind,
